On Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at 1104PM, members of the Ramsey Police Department were dispatched to the Maple Shade Motel 424 Rt. 17 SB for a robbery in progress in room 13.
Upon arrival, Ramsey Officers with the assistance of the Upper Saddle River Police Department determined that the room was empty. The owner of the Maple Shade Motel was contacted and he informed that the room was rented by individuals that recently were involved with police activity in the past weeks. Shortly thereafter, the complainant/witness arrived back at the scene.
The witness reported that several friends, including the victim were at the hotel when a fight broke in room 13. After receiving this information, the identity of the victim was determined. Contact was made and the victim responded to Ramsey Police Headquarters. The victim reported that he entered room 13 with two acquaintances and found two unknown males in the room. Shortly after entering the room the two individuals, who were later identified as Christopher Balcom and a 17 year old juvenile from Mahwah, began to assault the victim. During the assault, the victim was threatened to be shot and was held down. The victim also had $150 of U.S. currency taken from him, along with several other personal items. The victim was transported to Valley Hospital for treatment of facial injuries.
During the course of the investigation, the responding officers were able to positively identify the actors by previous contacts with the actors as well as victim and witness observations along with the information supplied by the hotel owner. During the course of the investigation marijuana and alcoholic beverages was in plain view in the room.
On Wednesday Nov. 12th 2014 along with members of the Mahwah Police Department were able to take Balcom and the juvenile into custody.

Ramsey Police Officers responded to and investigated the following cases:
On Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 0103 hours Patrolman Mike Canonico conducted a motor vehicle stop on North Franklin Turnpike. At the conclusion of the stop, Christopher Castillo age 18 of Mahwah, NJ was arrested for possession of marijuana under fifty grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Wednesday November 5, 2014 at 1115 hrs., Patrolman Scott Peterson conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 17 South. At the conclusion of the stop, Anthony Rivera age 19 of Paterson, NJ was arrested for Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams.
On Thursday, November 6, 2014, at 1437 hours, Ramsey Police Dispatch was advised of a possible intoxicated driver on East Main Street in the area of Ramsey High School. Patrolman Anthony Fiore located the vehicle and conducted a motor vehicle stop. At the conclusion of the stop, Mark Pierce age 47 of Ringwood, NJ was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated within 1000 feet of a School Zone.
On November 7, 2014 at 1205 hours, Detective Brad Smith assisted the Mahwah Police Department with an investigation at a Route 17 South motel. At the conclusion of the investigation, Christopher Castillo age 18 of Mahwah, NJ was arrested for Possession of Marijuana under 50 Grams and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Christopher Balcom age 18 of Mahwah, NJ was arrested for Possession of Marijuana under 50 Grams and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On Monday, November 10, 2014 at 0221 hours, Patrolman Robert McMackin conducted an investigation on South island Avenue. At the conclusion of the investigation, Robert Fanning age 23 of Ramsey, NJ was arrested for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
On Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 1853 hours, Patrol Officer Diane Warnet was dispatched to a Route 17 North business for a motor vehicle crash and possible intoxicated driver. At the conclusion of the investigation, Enid Sanchez-Mossmann age 47 of Mahwah, NJ was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While Intoxicated with minors in the vehicle.
On Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 1142 hours, Patrolman Robert McMackin investigated a suspicious vehicle at a Route 17 North business. At the conclusion of the investigation, Andrew Wagner age 26 of Ramsey, NJ was arrested for possession of controlled dangerous substances heroin and cocaine; possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; Under the influence of any controlled dangerous substance; and Driving While Intoxicated.
On Friday, November 14, 2014 at 2337 hours, Patrolman Christopher McWilliams conducted a motor vehicle stop on South Central Avenue. At the conclusion of the stop, Austyn Rybacki age 19 of Ramsey, NJ was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.
On Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 0206 hours, Patrolman Bryan Paul conducted a motor vehicle stop on North Franklin Turnpike. At the conclusion of the stop, Matthew Wrenn age 44 of NY, NY was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
